Ten-year anniversary of Svalbard Global Seed VaultPublisert: 16. May, 2018
After 10 years in operation, the government has awarded 100 million kroner to refurbishment of the Global Seed Vault. This is to ensure that today's access tunnel will be replaced by a robust and waterproof concrete structure. The aim of the improvement is that the plant will withstand a warmer climate in the future.
Dr.Techn.Olav Olsen AS has assisted Statsbygg in the design of the new and improved access tunnel in concrete.
Dr.techn. Olav Olsen is executing the project in cooperation with ECT Elektro, Erichsen & Horgen, NGI, Instanes AS and Snøhetta.
The seed tunnel access tunnel should be rehabilitated by replacing existing steel pipe solution with a tight tunnel in concrete. This requires the removal of approximately 17,000 cubic meters of mass. The refilled masses must be frozen to re-establish the permafrost. Measures are also taken to guide surface water away from the building pit and portal building. At the same time, a new building is being built in the area that will house technical installations. This is placed about 40 meters away from the Portal Building, based on the assessment of snow drift around the buildings.
