We congratulate Nora R. Fjøsne on Dr.techn. Olav Olsen's Innovation Award 2020

This year's prize is awarded to Nora R. Fjøsne, for her work in analyzing hydrological, technical, economic and environmental conditions regarding "Retrofitting" of existing water supply dams for hydropower production.

Dr.techn. Olav Olsen's Innovation Award "DEN FRIE TANKE" for students at NTNU to promote creative and value-adding solutions, calculation methods and processes as well as quality and professional competence.

"The Award will encourage and inspire potential employees in the construction industry to develop creative solutions that can contribute to developing our field and society in a good way"

The committee justifies, among other things, the selection with the following:

Clean water and clean energy are two of the UN's 17 sustainability goals and are an important part of the main goal 9) Industry, innovation and infrastructure with regard to infrastructure for production and distribution of water and energy. Clean water and clean energy are also very important for several other sustainability goals as main goals 3) Good health and quality of life, 9) Industry, innovation and infrastructure and 11) Sustainable cities and local communities. According to statistics from the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), irrigation is the most common function for today's dams, while hydropower is only produced at 27% of the dams. This shows that there is a significant potential for the use of existing water dams and infrastructure for conversion to the production of renewable energy. This year's award winner has analyzed hydrological, technical, economic and environmental conditions regarding "retrofitting" of existing water supply dams for hydropower production. The study, which is a radical new idea for the development of renewable energy based on existing infrastructure, has been carried out with high academic quality and is interdisciplinary. The student has completed the work with the use of "state-of-art" model tools by establishing a "digital twin" of the relevant catchment area. The student has used the inspiration she has received from exchange abroad. There is an international journal article and a conference paper based on the results of the studies.

Title of the Master thesis: «Demonstrating the retrofitting potential of non-powered dams for hydropower production». and her supervisor for the thesis was Tor Haakon Bakken who is a Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The winner of the award  will be compensated with NOK 25,000 and Nora says that she will use the money to travel to Spain and visit the ponds she describes in her thesis.
