Efficient design of fixed and floating offshore concrete structures

Learn how to save time when designing concrete structures with special-purpose software ShellDesign in combination with Sesam. Up until now, engineers working with offshore concrete structures have typically relied on general-purpose tools or in-house scripts to ensure compliance.


The Flagship project has officially started

The Flagship project, based on Olav Olsen’s innovative and cost efficient floating concept “OO-Star Wind Floater”, has officially started. All 12 partner companies plus the EC-officer participated when the H2020 project Flagship had its kick-off on September 17th.

Contract signed between Dr.techn.Olav Olsen and SAREN B.V. branch for world’s largest LNG GBS

Dr.techn.Olav Olsen (OO) signed earlier this year a contract with SAREN B.V. for the support with engineering services for the world's largest LNG GBSs completed. The GBSs to be built are part of three LNG trains, with a capacity of 6.6 mtpa of LNG each, and at least 1.6 mtpa of stable gas condensate.
OO contributes to the detail design of the concrete GBSs, in addition to follow-up on the construction site with an on-site representative. The work is executed within an integrated team located in Paris and Moscow with back office support from Norway.

OO scope of work comprise aspects like conceptual evaluations, linear and non-linear FE analyses, ice- and wave loading and concrete design. Challenges related to strict tightness criteria of the storage tanks and documentation of capacity for accidental blast loading are amongst those having been studied, while a large bulk of the work is concrete structural design.

Despite the corona virus and following infection control measures, OO's contribution to the project remains in full speed, however with the project team currently located in Norway.


Breakthrough for OO-Star Wind Floater

10 years of technical development and extensive documentation have resulted in a breakthrough for Dr.techn. Olav Olsen’s innovative foundation concept for floating offshore wind turbines: "OO-Star Wind Floater". Through the Horizon 2020 program, the EU has pledged to fund EUR 25 million to a strong European consortium led by the world's largest wind power producer Iberdrola to demonstrate the full scale OO-Star Wind Floater.


CFD - Computational Fluid Dynamics

Dr.techn. Olav Olsen has recently established in-house competency for performing CFD simulations (Computational Fluid Dynamics). With a team of engineers holding multiple doctoral and master's degrees in marine engineering, numerical methods and fluid dynamics among them, we now provide detailed numerical calculations in 2D and 3D for simulations of wave, liquid and gas transport through the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations. This enables us to predict loads, flow patterns, and thermal effects that are closer to real life scenarios and have a higher degree of accuracy than using traditional methods. In this way, CFD will be able to expand the possibilities where technical standards and regulations may be limiting.


WaveRoller successfully installed

Congratulations to AW Energy for installing the innovative and promising WaveRoller technology in Portugal October 25th. Olav Olsen is proud to have designed the “self-installing” concrete foundation for the WaveRoller unit. It has been an exciting project to work with requiring innovative thinking and close focus on cost and practicality.
